About Of Cattle and Men by Ana Paula Maia
In an impoverished, isolated corner of Brazil, a slaughterhouse becomes the setting for a series of disturbing events. Edgar Wilson works as a stun operator, dispatching cattle and following orders as the animals grow increasingly unsettled. When some charge into buildings and others plunge from a cliff, the people around him search for an explanation.
Ana Paula Maia’s contemporary Brazilian novella blends literary fiction with horror and thriller elements. Its stark focus on slaughterhouse labor, animal behavior, and mounting violence may appeal to readers interested in translated Latin American fiction and unsettling, compact narratives.
